The witches new year...

Samhain is when we mark the end of the seasonal year, when we store away for the following year, when the veil between the worlds is thin and we celebrate those who have gone before us. It is a spiritual time and one that works well for divination and scrying.

The Witches new year, probably the most celebrated Witches Sabbat I would think and of course … trick or treating…and my birthday ;-)

I love this time of the year (and not just coz of the presents…).  I love autumn, the crisp, fresh air, the crunch of the leaves under foot, the evenings drawing in, the promise of warm nights indoors with a good book and a big bowl of casserole.

It is a time of introspection, a time to look back over all that has occurred over the previous months.  Looking at the projects that were started, ones that have worked, ones that have failed, examining them all and re-evaluating.

I always decorate the house and we do get a lot of trick or treaters.  I move the furniture in my lounge so that I can put a sideboard in the bay window and I decorate it as a Samhain altar – pumpkins, cobwebs, candles, bats – all the Halloween decorations.  I always dress up too.

Samhain is a good time to connect with spirit.  I usually put up an ancestors altar with black and white photographs of my grandparents and great grandparents.  I like to scry with water and use the crystal ball too.

Along with all the decorations in the house my working altar and my main altar will also be decorated.  Black altar clothes, lace, orange and black candles and I even have black roses.

I also make Mexican hot chocolate (hot milk, melted chocolate squares, cinnamon, cardamom and cloves).

So I wish all of you a witchy Happy New Year ♥

Spiritual tattoos

I have spent a total of nine hours in the tattoo studio this past week, two tattoos - one completely new and  based on the moon Goddess Chang-O and the other added to a small pentacle tattoo I already had which ended up being a kind of henna style with crescent moons, flowers of life and Odin's protection symbol.

I am extremely lucky that my tattoo artist (Taran from Kiss My Ink in Petersfield) is incredibly spiritual, she teaches all sorts of Eastern mysteries including Kundalini yoga and runs sound baths as well as adding her spiritual energy to the tattoos that she creates.

For me a big part of all my tattoos is the spiritual side, each one represents a step on my spiritual journey and part of my pathway.

I have dragonflies, faeries, pentacles, goddess symbols, Merlin, a dragon, Rhiannon, pumpkins, the Green Man, the triple Goddess, the moon and a Dryad and the names of my children - each of them has a special meaning to me.

Am running out of space now so not sure if there will be any more, but they are a huge part of ME and who I am.

I do not regret any of them and don't think I ever will, they depict my journey, my pathway through life.

I have been asked the usual "did it hurt" (seriously???) and "do they wash off" (hmmmm) and "what will you do when you get older" (how about be a really cool grandma??).

And one of the best comments from my long suffering and very tolerant husband (who hates tattoos) "it's like waking up next to Tommy Lee" ... he was joking...I think ♥

Pimping and preparing...

Part of being an author (and not being anywhere near as famous as J K Rowling) is that you have to get out there and pimp yourself.

I make no apologies for doing this (although I do find it quite embarrassing...) it is a necessary marketing tool.  No point writing books with knowledge and experience that you want to share with others if no one knows about them is it?  That would just be silly ;-)

So a couple of weekends ago I pranced about in my back garden in several different witchy outfits whilst hubby took photos (the neighbours are quite used to our bizarre actions by now), brilliant graphic artist hubby then messed about with said photos on the computer to come up with lots of lovely promotional flyers and images. (See image above and my new blog header).

And today I have set up a Pinterest account to add to my facebook and twitter one.

2013 has been an amazing year, not just because of the books but also because of the talks and workshops I have been asked to do - I am truly thankful and very humbled that people want to listen to my waffle.

2014 I think will be even bigger and even busier...I am getting ready...foundation is the key...preparation is paramount...I am ready (or I will be very soon)...bring it on...

A Modern Celt

A Modern Celt by Mabh Savage

The author takes us on a journey through the ancient culture of the Celts but brings it into the modern day taking the ideas that we have about the Celts, their way of life, beliefs and mythology and how it influences us today.

This book covers the key figures in Celtic history - The Children of Danu, The Morrigan, The Dagda, Brigid, Lugh and Cu Chulainn, but it also covers the Wheel of the Year, magic, the Fae and animals.

Very interesting and comprehensive book.

The official blurb:

Celtic tradition is at the heart of many aspects of popular modern pagan paths, and this book brings those aspects together to explore the relevance of a 2000-year-old culture in modern-day society. A Modern Celt looks at the Tuatha de Danaan, who they were and their continuing relevance in the 21st century. It looks at several of the key figures and the legends surrounding them, and considers how they relate to real life, everyday events, and the power they can lend us to deal with our own problems.
The wheel of the year brings Celtic festivals and a modern calendar together, and these corner posts of the year help us understand the world as something that existed long before humans arrived, and hopefully will continue to exist long after we are gone. A Modern Celt considers some of the things we do to try and preserve it, and how these can be inspired by our Celtic roots. With musings from members of Celtic paths about why they feel such a tie to their Celtic ancestry, A Modern Celt paints a picture of an ancient world, alive and thriving today.

Reiki, empowered by it, embraced by it, claimed by it...

Reiki, empowered by it, embraced by it, claimed by it...by Robert Levy

"Do you think the Universe, in her ultimate wisdom, would present humanity with the wonderful gift of Reiki and then dictate that everyone use it and practice it in exactly the same way"

A direct quote from this book that caught my attention straight away - the gift of Reiki is not generic, it is personal.

The book claims to help you discover your Reiki and claim it as your own and it does just that, which is incredibly refreshing and liberating.

It also covers everything you ever wanted or needed to know about Reiki.

This book is a must have for anyone that practices Reiki.

Invoking Animal Magic

Invoking Animal Magic by Hearth Moon Rising

Interesting take on animal magic, this isn't the usual animal totem reference book, in fact it is not that at all.  It does however cover some of the major totems such as the snake, bats and mice but more interestingly intertwined in history, myths and goddesses.  Set out in sections with titles such as The Underworld, The Womb, The Soil, The Dreamworld and The Long Journey.

It takes you on a mystical tour of animal magic ... absolutely fascinating.

The official blurb:

Invoking Animal Magic explores the power and wisdom of animal allies. More than a compilation of interesting facts—stories, folklore and animal behavior are integrated in a modern pagan perspective. Illustrations based on cave paintings and artifacts add a visual component to the text while thought-provoking questions and fun activities help ground the material in personal experience. Invoking Animal Magic offers an in-depth study of nine animals, each with an important place in Euro-paganism—their myths and legends, historical context and magical themes. Rituals and spells are also included in each section.
